You have 2 twin goals to keep in mind with SEO:
- Making your site Search Engine friendly
- Making it flow for your reader
You’ve realized by now that good SEO is not as natural as breathing – but it should be natural. And what is more, it should feel natural to your reader – and the editors checking Google and Curlie Search Engine/directory submissions.
It should all boil down to one crucial element: Did the potential customer browsing your website find exactly the sort of content she expected to find?
One final factor to keep in mind: Don’t listen to anyone who tries to pressure you into abandoning your basic SEO for the latest craze.
See what works – and if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!
11 Unwitting Ways To Commit Google Sacrilege
- Use duplicate content – after all, the directory you’re taking it from says you can, right?
- Use lots of clichés: After all, Google won’t count the other 9,302,771 people’s use as duplicate content and shunt you all straight off to Limbo – right?)
- Use “Mirror sites” – with more than one URL for your home page. (Hey, Google will never catch on to your brilliant sneakiness!)
- Take advantage (without any checking at all) of those persistent offers to “submit your site to thousands of Search Engines”.
- Merrily buy links and exchange links with sites that have no relevance to your market or subject theme. Make sure to not do this one when you remember what to keep in mind with SEO strategies.
- Linking your SEO company, along with all their other customers, must be good, right? After all, they SAID so…
- Hey, use lots of “doorway” pages loaded with keywords that the general public will never see. (And don’t worry about those links to all sorts of unrelated companies your SEO company has laced them with. After all, they know what they’re doing…)
- Manipulate your text with verbal acrobatics – it doesn’t matter if it “reads” like pidgin English – just get those keywords in! (After all, who really cares if the keyphrase “target your buyer teacups” looks really, really odd when it comes out in your article as: “…finish off by shopping at Target. Buyer teacups are good value.” And the DMOZ and Google editors reading it are going to be so impressed with your ingenuity!)
- By all means go into a “Chicken Little” panic if your site drops a couple of positions in the rankings. Start throwing out your key phrases, redesign the entire site – and don’t bother adding fresh content and waiting a week or two, to see if it readjusts.
- Go with the cheapest, shadiest web host you can find. After all, it doesn’t matter if a Spider Bot finds your site down for the third time, and deletes it from the Google index.
- Stuff your site full of links that don’t relate to your theme or website content. Have “Harry’s Bar and Grill” link to your banana exporting business. Have “Mighty Pet Food” link to your “Travel in the Himalayas” blog. Oh. And while you’re at it, get your cousin Theo to link his 1960’s Muscle Car blog to your Organic Garden website. After all you two are related – even if your subject matter and links aren’t.
(And of course, you DO know I’m being totally tongue in cheek, and that you really shouldn’t do ANY of the above, I hope 🙂 )
There’s so much more to SEO – you could actually spend years studying it.
But if you put even 2/3 of my basic techniques and tips to work in your marketing efforts, your results will start to improve – definitely not overnight, but quickly enough to make you glad you took these steps.
And maybe even quickly enough to surprise you!
